Discipline

Monday began with the morning routine of raising the flag, singing, exercise, etc. Then certain grade students lined up for their swats. They were the ones in charge of cleaning the grounds after Children’s Day, and apparently, it wasn’t clean enough. So they each got two taps with a stick on the backs of their calves, afterwhich each child would bow and say “thank you”. If they don’t say “thank you” (“for helping me learn”) it’s a sign of pent up anger. When we told Ra we are not allowed to hit students, she couldn’t believe it. “How do you teach them right from wrong?”
“We don’t,” I laughed. Then Bob explained detentions, suspensions, time outs, and other methods.
