Washing

by

We washed the dishes. That’s when I understood why Sophie didn’t want our help. I saw the mortified looks on the women’s faces when they saw me washing the dishes, contaminating the water with my left hand – the lazy hand, the dirty hand. This is totally unacceptable. It isn’t easy being left handed in Malawi!

Pans are washed using dirt. You make a paste and scrub it on like sandpaper, then rinse it off with soap and water. It works like a charm. Caleb taught us this trick. He is always helping his mom, and he does it so cheerfully.
