Mining

by

On Wednesday, Bob visited a proposed gold mine site. Environmental degradation is a major concern, especially water pollution, since large amounts of cyanide is used to extract the gold. El Salvador water is polluted today largely because of mining done in the ’40’s and ’50’s. A previous administration contracted with a Canadian mining company. They would give El Salvador 2% of the profits. The new administration put a 5 year moratorium on mining to study the impact. Investigators have found local mayors suddenly wealthy. A well funded PR campaign by the mining company pays for festivals and school construction but makes no mention of risks of pollution etc. Activists have started educating the population and have begun to pay a price for that. Several have been murdered. The mining company is suing the government who can barely afford the millions of dollars in legal fees.
